Durga Puja Parikrama 2016

This year, my Durga Puja Parikrama has been short. The year 2016 witnessed a rain-interrupted Durga Puja which of course did not curb the enthusiasm of the Bengalis. I am a resident of Baishnabghata Patuli Township, which is a prime location nowadays as far as real estate market is concerned. The number of people living here in Patuli has risen significantly over the last few years due to a lot of new constructions that have taken place. Patuli celebrates Durga Puja with the same pomp and glory as in other parts of Kolkata and West Bengal.

Durga Pujas organized in our locality are famous for achieving remarkable awards and recognition   and the various criteria in which these pujas have won the awards include pratima or idol, decorating the pandal, lighting, theme et al. I covered the Durga pujas in BP Township and the surrounding neighborhoods for the last four years (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015), I also did it this year but I did not take my camera with me due to the rain factor.

I covered the following pujas: Baishnabghata Patuli Sarbojonin Durgotsab (H Block), Baishnabghata Patuli Upanagari Sporting Club Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Patuli Central Club Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Uttar Purba Baishnabghata Patuli Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Kendua Shanti Sangha Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Jatrashuru Sangha Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Patuli Ghoshpara Mahilabrindo Parichalito Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Rabindrapally Jubak Sangha Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Briji Kalyan Samiti Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Chaitali Club YMCA Sarbojonin Durgotsab, Amra Kojon and Anandamela Sporting Club Sarbojonin Durgotsab. In addition, I went to SIRSA, my childhood place where I stayed for 10 long years to relive the moments of Durga Puja celebrated there. This year, people of all ages defied the rain and went out to capture the glimpses of this popular festival. I used my Gionee P5W mobile phone to take all these snaps. Next blog coming up soon! See you till then.

Roadside clicks near Patuli Jheel Par (Lake)

Of late, Patuli Jheel Par or the lakeside and the adjacent areas of Baishnabghata Patuli Township have been beautified by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The area belongs to Ward no 101 of KMC, one of the erstwhile added areas under the century-old civic authority. The area has been developed in various ways, such as fixing of light posts, improvement of road condition, reduction of power outage, better water supply, improved sewerage, timely clearance of garbage and other civic amenities. Other than these activities, beautification has also been a priority and this has been done quite aptly over the past one or two years.

Now, the photographs that I have posted bear testimony to the different types of beautification endeavors performed in the area. A number of trident lights have been fixed in the area, gardens have been created with a variety of exotic natural and artificial flowers, and fountains sprinkling waters with different brilliant hues have been set up, Signposts with names and drawings of luminaries of Bengal have also been erected at different places. However, the most attractive part of the decoration has been the artwork on cement. Here you will find scenes depicting various contemporary and ancient events that will definitely attract you. Starting from the Sphinx (a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion) and Anubis (the God of the dead) of Egypt to Abhigyan Shakuntalam, the scenes are really charming for the spectators. The artist has done a tremendous job in replicating these age-old characters. I have clicked all the photos with my new Nikon Coolpix P900 ultrazoom camera. The photo album link is given below. Hope to see you soon! Bye for now.

Why I have chosen Nikon Coolpix P900 and why I don't need anything more

Tuesday, 26th April, 2016 will always remain a special day in my life. This is the day on which I bought Nikon Coolpix P900, a grand superzoom digital camera from Harmony House, one of the prestigious showrooms for electronics goods in the Southern suburbs of Kolkata. It is also noteworthy that they are authorized dealers of Nikon India Private Ltd.

About Nikon Coolpix P900

Nikon Coolpix P900 is an ultrazoom digital bridge camera which has the ability and features to compete with any DSLR camera. This was launched by Nikon Corporation on the 2nd day of March, 2015. The unique feature of this camera is that it has 83x optical zoom and a highest focal length of 2000 mm, which is unparalleled when it was launched. It is a complementary model of Nikon Coolpix P610, launched 1-2 weeks ago.

Nikon Coolpix P900 has a resolution of 16 megapixels with a 24-2000 mm equivalent lens, ideal for wildlife photography. It has Expeed C2 image processor and has a continuous shooting feature of 7 FPS (frames per second) with 100% frame coverage. The picture quality is undoubtedly exceptional. Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC technology give it a better edge. The only disadvantage is its weight, which including battery is 899 gm, almost a kilo. Next blog coming up soon! See you till then.

My cross-process and selective color photography experiments

It's been a while that I purchased Nikon Coolpix P600 camera and I am loving every shot I am taking with it. P600 is an ultrazoom bridge camera by Nikon with many features similar to a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera. It is worth mentioning that it gives you the option to take pics with selective color or cross process, an option which very few cameras offer to the photography enthusiasts. For applying cross process or selective color effect to your photos, you need to select the effects (special effects) shooting mode of the camera. After setting the mode, just press on the "menu" button for displaying the special effects menu and choose an effect with the multi-selector.

Options offered by effects mode in Nikon P600

When you select the effects mode in Nikon P600, the various options available before you are the following:

1) Soft (default setting)
2) High-contrast monochrome
3) Nostalgic sepia
4) Painting
5) Low key
6) High key
7) Selective color
8) High ISO monochrome
9) Cross process

When you want to add the selective color effect, then only a selected color is kept and other colors will show black-and-white. In case of cross-process effect, images will be created with an unusual hue by changing over a positive color image into negative or negative color image into positive.

Filter effects offered by Nikon P600

In addition, no matter in which shooting mode you shoot the snaps, the filter effects available to you are as follows:

1) Soft portrait
2) Cross screen
3) Selective color
4) Miniature effect
5) Fish-eye
6) Vignette
7) Painting
8) Portrait (Color + B&W)
9) Photo illustration

Given below are some links of the photographs that I have clicked with the selective color and cross-process effects. Bye for now! Next blog coming up soon!

Patuli Jheel....lakeside views of Baishnabghata Patuli Township clicked by me

Our area, Baishnabghata Patuli Township, has undergone a number of changes over the years. Beautification of the area and betterment of the civic amenities have been the primary focus of the local administration and they indeed have done a good job in this regard. The area looks completely different from what it looked like few years ago.

I came to Baishnabghata Patuli Township in 1995 when I was just eighteen years old, preparing to appear for my Higher Secondary Examination. After that 20 or more years have passed and I am beginning to love my area more and more as the days pass by.

I have clicked a number of photographs of my area, documenting its development and beautification. There are a number of water bodies in the area, maintaining the ecological balance of the place. All the water bodies are being owned and looked after by the Fisheries department. In addition, the gardens bordering these water bodies have been well tended to. You will find a wide assortment of beautiful flowers decorating these gardens. A number of streetlights have also been installed for illuminating the streets of the township and portraits of luminaries of Bengal in the form of signposts.have been fixed. Multi-hued fountains are a top draw of these water bodies. Seating arrangements have been especially made for the senior citizens at some places. At present, Patuli lakeside or jheel can be easily portrayed as a mini tourist attraction for people who are new visitors to Kolkata. The area can provide a lot of solace and refreshment for the needy. Next blog coming up soon! See you till then.
